The harshness of the Dasangrad outskirts mattered very little to Maya. For years she had spent time wandering the seemingly endless golden-brown plains with her brother Arvan, taking refuge in the dry winds that whipped through her raven-black hair. She grew up on a farm in these grasslands long ago. She knew about how cold the surrounding areas could be at night, as well as the occasional mana-enhanced creatures that occasionally wandered about them. Now, however, both she and her brother were venerated soldiers in the Dasangrad army serving under the great General Jericho. It was an honor and privilege to do so.
In fact, it was under his orders that she now stood on seemingly the only hill for miles, watching the group of bandits in the distance.
Luckily it seemed that she had not arrived quite so late as she had feared. Earlier that day, someone had arrived in Dasangrad Square panicking about bandits who had attacked their camp. Maya and the general had been nearby when they heard the news. Jericho, believing that prompt action was required, immediately dispatched her to investigate. Before she set off on her new—and sudden—mission, Jericho pulled her to the side, keeping an emerald-green armored glove on her shoulder. The general stared at her with piercing blue eyes and spoke in a quiet yet serious tone.
“These may be the same bandits that have been terrorizing the peasantry of late,” he told her. “You will be more than a match for them, but all the same, use caution. They will likely use deceptive tactics in combat.” Then the general smirked, his eyes glimmering with pride. “Use your own. Show them no quarter. Destroy them, Maya.”
Maya simply nodded and turned, exiting the city of Dasangrad through the large arched western gate. She would of course follow her general's orders to the letter.
Bandits in the southern region of Ender tended to be depraved, ruthless, and lacking in hygiene. The men who sat around the abysmal flame they considered a campfire were all vagabonds to be sure. Disheveled, dirty, hairy... They were truly despicable creatures. Several of them were shuffling through their recent spoils, going through clothes and other items which had once belonged to their victims. Maya gritted her teeth in an effort to restrain herself. Her hands rested on the hilts of her weapons, tracing the engravings on their disc-shaped pommels.
Perhaps it was understandable why the general would send her of all people after these filth, and not simply because she was with him when they'd heard the news. He knew she would take this mission personal. Whether or not she appreciated that sort of sentiment from the general, however, was up for debate. All it did was serve as a reminder of her past, of the reason why she became a soldier in the first place. Maya had no desire to face the dregs of past memories once more. Right now she needed to confront the thieving ruffians and put them down like the dogs they were.
